For nearly a decade there has been one position on the pitch which has never been a major concern for Liverpool supporters.

Alisson Becker has been hands down one of the best in the world since his arrival at Anfield in 2018.

The Brazilian has faced several injury setbacks during his time in Merseyside, but when he has been fit there has been very little for Reds to worry about between the sticks.

Nothing lasts forever though, and the 33-year-old is now into the final 12 months of his deal at Anfield.

With such uncertainty surrounding the future of Liverpool's main man a succession plan is already in place, but things are now 'make or break' for the heir apparent.

Mamardashvili's Liverpool future has never been less certain

Liverpool's current backup 'keeper is Giorgi Mamardashvili, and it has been clear since a deal for the Georgian was announced in 2024 that the club viewed him as the long-term successor to Alisson.

When the Reds' number one faced injury problems last season, Mamadashvili was the man to step up, but the 25-year-old failed to leave a lasting impression, with his ball distribution especially poor.

After impressing in his first outing this season, Liverpool's 3-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, all hope is not lost for Mamardashvili at Anfield.

James Pearce summed the Georgian's situation up perfectly, stating on X that this season feels 'make or break' for the man that Liverpool still believe will be Alisson's successor.

The biggest sign that the club may be wavering from their original plans was the €35 million signing of 18-year-old Lucca Brughmans from Genk this summer.

The teenager hasn't joined the club yet, but it does seem likely that the long-term plan is for the Belgian shot stopper to eventually become number one at Anfield.

Although a few seasons as Mamardashvili's deputy may be in store first, Brughmans will be putting the pressure on and the Georgian needs to start taking every opportunity he can to cement his place as first-choice when Alisson departs.

The club also have the option of talented Hungarian 'keeper Arman Pesci, so the following eight months really will be make or break for Mamardashvili, but his performance against Tottenham was an excellent start.
