Lewis Koumas and Liverpool: Why Andoni Iraola May Keep the Forward Around

Lewis Koumas has reached the point where potential needs to become usefulness. At Liverpool, that matters. Pre-season under Andoni Iraola is not a sightseeing tour for academy players. It is an audit. You either look capable of helping the first team, or you go back out on loan.

Koumas, now 20 and a Wales international, appears to understand that. His target is clear and there is no fluff around it. “Yeah, definitely. I think I’m a player that the gaffer could sort of like, with the way I press and the energy I can give to the team. I’m always looking to impress so I’ll just see where it takes me.” That will appeal to Iraola, whose teams rely on aggression, intensity and players who can work without the ball.

This is the first thing to establish. Koumas has traits the new Liverpool head coach values. He presses, he runs and he can operate across the front line. In a squad game, versatility buys you time. Coaches like options, especially in pre-season, when they are sorting through who can be trusted and who still needs protecting.

There is a practical case for Koumas staying involved. Liverpool need depth, and they need players who can fill more than one role. He is naturally a left-sided, right-footed winger, but he has enough mobility and willingness to do jobs elsewhere. That does not make him a guaranteed squad member. It makes him relevant.

That relevance increases because Iraola has been appointed to improve what is already in the building, not simply wait for recruitment to solve every issue. Koumas is the sort of player a coach tests hard in July and August. Can he handle the pressing load? Can he make quick decisions? Can he contribute without possession? If the answer is yes, he gives Liverpool a workable internal option.

The player himself is keeping the message simple. “[My target is] to play for Liverpool in the Premier League, of course. But if that’s not how it ends up going, I’m always looking to develop and always looking to improve my game. We’ll just see what happens and see where it takes me.” That is the right tone. Ambitious, but realistic.

Liverpool Squad Role Still Needs Defining

There is one obvious complication. Left wing is not exactly barren territory at Liverpool. So if Koumas is to have a real role, it may come through flexibility rather than specialisation. He needs to show he can cover the right, perhaps play off a central striker, and offer enough end product to justify minutes.

Liverpool are still expected to strengthen in attacking areas. That is common sense. A club with major ambitions does not go into a season hoping a 20-year-old solves every depth problem. But there is a difference between being a solution and being a useful piece. Koumas can be the latter.

If he earns Premier League minutes, they will come because he forces the issue in training and friendlies, not because of sentiment. That is how it should be.
