Liverpool continue their charge towards the Premier League title with a midweek showdown against Newcastle United at Anfield. This fixture also serves as a preview of their upcoming Carabao Cup final meeting, adding extra intrigue to an already significant encounter.
Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota are both in contention to start after making their returns from injury. Jota remained on the bench during Liverpool’s impressive 3-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad, while Gakpo featured briefly in the closing moments.
Arne Slot surprised many by opting to play without a recognised striker against City, deploying Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones in advanced roles. However, he later clarified that this decision was out of necessity rather than preference.
“First of all, Diogo Jota told me yesterday [Saturday] he wasn’t fully recovered yet, so he couldn’t start,” Slot explained. “Cody Gakpo only trained for the first time yesterday, so that means two attacking options less.”

With a full week to recover before their Champions League clash against PSG, Liverpool are likely to name a strong starting XI. The extra rest period reduces the need for heavy rotation, but some minor tweaks could still be on the cards.
Kostas Tsimikas may replace Andy Robertson at left-back, offering fresh legs on the flank. Meanwhile, Szoboszlai, who looked exhausted after his efforts against City, could be given a well-earned rest if Slot opts to tweak his midfield setup.
One name certain to feature is Mohamed Salah, who continues to enjoy an outstanding campaign. The Egyptian has already registered 25 goals and 16 assists in the league, underlining his importance to Liverpool’s title challenge.
