Joe Gomez Returns for Liverpool Ahead of Tottenham Carabao Cup Tie

Liverpool have Joe Gomez back, and that matters. The defender has not played this season after suffering a muscle strain in July, but he is now available for Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup meeting with Tottenham at Anfield.

Andoni Iraola kept it simple when discussing the centre-back’s status. “Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It’s a matter of deciding how much he can play.” That tells you two things. Gomez is fit enough to be involved, but Liverpool will still manage his minutes carefully.

Iraola Set for Liverpool Rotation

There will be changes, and plenty of them. Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to start in goal in place of Alisson Becker, while Iraola also made clear that squad players are due an opportunity. “we will see tomorrow players we haven’t seen”. In a domestic cup tie, that is the logical move.

Wataru Endo is one name to watch. He has yet to feature this season despite being on the bench, and this looks like a natural opening. Rio Ngumoha is pushing for a start after his appearance against Fulham, while Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas are also in line to come into the side.

Selection Calls Around Isak and Barcola

Liverpool’s options further forward are slightly restricted. Hugo Ekitike remains unavailable, which leaves Alexander Isak as the only senior centre-forward. Cody Gakpo can cover centrally, but the lack of depth up top could shape Iraola’s thinking.

Bradley Barcola may also come in again if the head coach wants more from his newer arrivals. The balance is straightforward, give youth a chance, but do not throw away control of the tie.
