Liverpool got their 2025/26 preseason campaign underway on Sunday. Arne Slot’s Premier League champions paid a visit to Deepdale to take on Preston North End in their first tune-up of the summer.
Goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo ensured the Reds got the win with Preston replying through Liam Lindsay.
Several stars pulled on the famous red shirt for the first time - including Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Freddie Woodman.
There were plenty of first-team players absent however with Florian Wirtz, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Alisson Becker, Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott among those to stay behind.
Slot opted to bulk up the playing squad with some youth and underage players. Luca Stephenson, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha started the match while Amara Nallo, Ben Doak and Lewis Koumas came off the bench.
It’s an encouraging sign for the academy graduates to be involved in the first-team picture at this stage although the future outlook remains unclear for some of those involved.
Koumas for example has been attracting interest from the Championship having spent last season out on loan at Stoke City. The 19-year-old played close to 50 matches in all for the Potters and could be again loaned out to gain first-team experience.
Sheffield United and Norwich City are two teams to have come forward with interest and now the versatile forward is wanted by another club.
Hull City would like to add Koumas on loan for the season according to the Hull Daily Mail.
But their approach could be complicated by a transfer embargo - with the Tigers not allowed to pay a fee for any player until January 2027. Therefore if Liverpool ask for a loan fee then Koumas won’t be heading there.

“The Tigers have also shown an interest in Liverpool's young teenage striker Lewis Koumas, who impressed on loan at Stoke City last year,” the report reads.
“With City placing all deals on hold that interest may not go anywhere, as rival clubs circle with Sheffield United and Norwich City now both reported as trying to push to get a deal done.
“Liverpool are likely to want a loan fee paying for Koumas, which would now rule out any deal unless City get their transfer fee restriction lifted by the EFL.
“However, as things stand the Tigers have not made any approach for Koumas, with him just remaining as a player of interest.”
Hull have previously taken the like of Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton on loan - with both impressing during temporary spells at the club during 2023/24.
Carvalho scored nine goals in 20 Championship matches - earning a big-money move to Brentford in summer 2024.
