Liverpool Face Huge Alisson Becker Question as Brad Friedel Names Possible Successor

Liverpool may have become used to elite goalkeeping standards, but replacing Alisson Becker would be one of the hardest succession plans in modern football. That, at least, is the view of former Reds goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who has offered a clear assessment of what Liverpool would need if their Brazilian number one were to leave Anfield this summer.

Alisson has again found himself linked with a possible move away, with Juventus reportedly among the clubs monitoring his situation. For Liverpool, the position is delicate. The 33-year-old remains under contract until June 2027, and despite recent injury issues, his level when fit remains among the very best in world football.

That much was evident again last weekend, when Alisson produced a superb save against Brentford, a reminder of why Liverpool have relied on him through domestic title races, Champions League nights and the transition into Arne Slot’s era.

Friedel Highlights Mentality Needed at Liverpool

Speaking to GOAL, Brad Friedel made it clear that replacing Alisson Becker would not simply be a matter of finding a talented shot stopper. At Liverpool, the job carries a psychological load few goalkeepers are built to handle.

When James Trafford was suggested as a possible replacement, Friedel replied: “Possibly, but you need someone with a skin of leather. You need someone who’s going to be able to play in all the big matches.

“You need someone who expects to win the Champions League, not just play in it. Expects to win the Champions League, win the Premier League, win the FA Cup and win the League Cup. It’s a different type of mentality that you need when you’re a goalkeeper at these top clubs, and it’s not easy to find.

“Trafford’s a really good goalkeeper. I like him a lot, but that’s also a lot to load onto him. Maybe the likes of an Emi Martínez, someone like that, that can take all the games all the time, any criticism, any plaudits, and they know how to deal with it. There aren’t many out there that you can just pinpoint and say: ‘He’s our guy’. That’s a hard decision.”

Martinez Suggestion Comes With Complications

Emiliano Martínez is, on paper, exactly the type of presence Friedel is describing. The Aston Villa goalkeeper has won the World Cup with Argentina, thrived under pressure and developed a reputation for embracing the biggest occasions rather than shrinking from them.

For Liverpool, though, the question is more complex. Martínez turns 34 in September, which makes him older than Alisson by a month. That age profile would sit awkwardly against Liverpool’s usual recruitment strategy, particularly under a structure designed to identify long term value.

There is also the matter of availability. Aston Villa would have little incentive to lose a senior goalkeeper of such stature, especially to a Premier League rival. Even if Liverpool admired the profile, turning admiration into a realistic deal would be another matter entirely.

Mamardashvili Still Has Development Ahead

Liverpool have already planned for life beyond Alisson by signing Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian has shown flashes of his quality, particularly with his reflex saves and imposing frame, but replacing Alisson Becker is not about isolated moments.

Alisson’s value has always been rooted in consistency, decision making and calm authority. He can spend long spells as a spectator, then produce the defining intervention of a match. That is the brutal standard Liverpool’s next long term goalkeeper will have to reach.
