Liverpool FC walked away from contract renewal talks with Ibrahima Konaté (27) in turning down an agreement, according to L’Equipe. The Reds confirmed on Sunday that the France international would leave Merseyside upon the expiry of the five-year contract he signed back in 2021 after joining from RB Leipzig. Konaté went on to become one of the finest right-sided centre-back in Europe.
The 27-year-old hinted at a “big chance” to extend his stay with Liverpool, but the chance came to pass. L’Equipe have provided further details on how Konaté and the Reds parted ways. The outlet adds that the Frenchman came very close to signing a contract extension in May, but the Premier League side opted to turn down the agreement.
Konaté is a target for Real Madrid, but reports of a pre-agreement between the France international and Los Merengues have been dismissed by the player’s entourage. What is certain is that Konaté will not entertain lucrative bids from Gulf clubs as he intends to remain in a competitive environment.
