Reds were beaten comprensively at the Etihad Stadium

A Premier League panel has said that Virgil van Dijk’s goal against Manchester City should have been allowed.

The ‘Key Match Incidents panel’, consisting of three ex–players and coaches and a representative from the Premier League and the PGMOL, said that Chris Kavanagh, the referee at the Etihad Stadium that day, should have let the Liverpool score stand.

Van Dijk, the Dutch defender, thought he had equalised for the Reds to make it 1-1 in the 38th minute, but the goal was ruled out by the officials for an offside against left-back Andy Robertson, who was deemed to be interfering with play.

VAR did not intervene - and that was the correct procedure - the panel claims.

Now, however, the decision has been ruled to be wrong, which will come as a blow to Liverpool boss Arne Slot, whose side went on to lose 3-0.

“I think it is obvious and clear the wrong decision has been made,” the Dutchman said. “He [Robertson] didn’t interfere at all with what the goalkeeper can do.”

Liverpool registered their dismay to the PGMOL the following Monday, insisting that the criteria for the decision had not been met.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb said that decision was correct on ‘Mic’d Up’, although he admitted that City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had “seen the ball all the way” despite the inferred infringement.
