Premier League champions Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday with a mouth-watering clash against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
The Reds will put their perfect domestic start and a formidable home European record on the line against the notoriously resilient Spanish side.
Arne Slot’s men have won their last 14 UEFA competition group stage games at Anfield, while Atletico have scored in 15 of their last 16 Champions League group stage matches, setting the stage for a compelling encounter.
Arne Slot may be without key midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who is a doubt after picking up a knock against Burnley.
However, Jeremie Frimpong is expected to return at right-back, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to move into midfield. Record signing Alexander Isak will be in the squad but is likely to start on the bench.
Diego Simeone is dealing with numerous injury concerns. Julian Alvarez and Johnny Cardoso have not travelled, joining Alex Baena on the sidelines. Key defender José Giménez is also ruled out, while David Hancko is a major doubt after limping off at the weekend.
In addition, Nico Gonzále and Robin Le Normand face late fitness tests to determine their availability for the trip to Anfield.
The Reds have been in perfect form, winning all four of their opening Premier League matches. They have created a new league record by securing each of those victories with a goal inside the final 10 minutes.
Furthermore, their home form in Europe is imperious; they have won their last 14 straight group stage games at Anfield in UEFA competitions, scoring at least twice on every occasion.
The Spanish side have had a mixed start to their La Liga campaign. After securing just two points from their opening three games, they found a much-needed 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Saturday.
Their ability to find the net in the Champions League group stage is a major strength, and they will be confident of testing Liverpool’s defence.
Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Frimpong, Konaté, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.
Atletico Madrid predicted XI: Oblak; Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Ruggeri; Simeone, Barrios, Koke, Gallagher; Griezmann, Sørloth.
The match will be broadcast live on TNT Sports in the UK, with coverage beginning at 7 pm BST.
