Liverpool vs Southampton Match Preview: It’s round three of the Carabao Cup, with Liverpool welcoming Southampton on Tuesday night. Arne Slot will be eyeing a comfortable victory against a struggling Saints side, who are yet to settle in England’s second tier.
Southampton will be hoping to see some positives to take. Despite an inevitable feeling of defeat already, it’s another game to tactically evolve and adapt against a far better side, which could prove beneficial in gaining some momentum in the league.
Liverpool have won six straight matches since the turn of the new season. While it was filled with many last-minute winners, positivity and confidence are blooming at Anfield. Conceding seven goals in six games may not look great on paper; however, scoring fourteen in the process shows their attacking capabilities.
Will Still’s Southampton are yet to concede in the Carabao Cup, due to wins against Northampton and Norwich. Their league form tells a different story, though, as they have only won one game in their first six matches. There are many pivotal issues that need addressing for the Saints: From defensive fragility to a lack of prolific goalscoring in the team.
In the Carabao Cup, this fixture has been played only 4 times, resulting in both sides winning twice. The only time Liverpool played at home led to the Saints winning 1-0 over eight years ago. In all competitions, Liverpool dominates, boasting 65 wins compared to Southampton’s 31, with 21 draws in the process.
On facing Liverpool:
“It’s a cup, it’s a one-off, I think all cup games are, and I think we just have to show a bit of personality, a bit of bravery to stand back up. It will also present a few opportunities for other players. So yeah, just go for it and don’t overthink it, don’t overanalyse it and stand up and be counted for.”
Liverpool (4-3-3): Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Gomez, Leoni, Robertson; Nyoni, Endo, Jones; Chiesa, Ngumoha, Isak
Southampton (3-4-2-1): McCarthy; Stephens, Wood, Edwards; Fraser, Downes, Charles, Jelert; Robinson, Scienza; Armstrong
Isak vs Southampton’s Defence — It’s the Swedish international’s best chance to score his first in front of the Anfield crowd. But has he had enough time to adapt, or will Saints find a way to keep him quiet?
Ngumoha vs Jelert — It will be an interesting test for both players. The Liverpool youngster hasn’t looked out of place in the Premier League, scoring the winner against Newcastle, and Southampton loanee Jelert looks set to have his first start for the Saints after joining on loan from Galatasaray.
Midfield – The middle of the park could prove decisive, even in a game where Liverpool are expected to dominate. Wataru Endo’s ability to dictate tempo and recycle possession will be crucial against a Southampton side likely to press. Flynn Downes, meanwhile, hasn’t been up to his usual standards this season, but a test against this calibre of opposition could be exactly what he needs to sharpen his game and rediscover his influence in midfield.
Liverpool’s last loss at home (in a competitive fixture) came against PSG in the Champions League. Since then, they haven’t fallen short on home soil and don’t look like stopping any time soon. From summer signings to academy talent, their squad should prove too much for Will Still and his men. While the Saints aren’t an easy rollover, they currently lack cohesion and form—two traits that are key in defeating top opposition.
Southampton’s most realistic path to goal will lie in sitting deep, keeping a robust shape, and looking to break on the counter. But with Liverpool boasting one of the quickest backlines, even those opportunities may be choked off before they develop. For the Saints, it will take a moment of real quality
