Liverpool are preparing for the potential exit of Ibrahima Konate and are eyeing Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet as his replacement at the Anfield club, according to Sky Sports Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri.
Liverpool have been trying to secure a contract extension for Konate, but talks have not progressed well, and the Reds manager, Arne Slot, knows he could leave as a free agent at the end of the season..
The Merseyside club are identifying potential replacements, with Jacquet, who is also on the radar of Arsenal, currently top of their wishlist.
Liverpool have scouted the 20-year-old Frenchman extensively this season and in the past, and they have concluded that he ‘has something special’.
The 6ft 2in France youth international has featured in 15 Ligue 1 games this term, and he has impressed.
Jacquet loves to dribble despite being a centre-back, and tackling and intercepting the ball are also some of his strengths.
He is a constant aerial threat in set-pieces, is comfortable on the ball and is an expert in finding attacking teammates with pinpoint long balls like Virgil van Dijk.
Arsenal wanted to lure him to England during the last summer transfer window but opted against tabling a serious bid.
The Gunners will continue to monitor his progress ahead of a possible future move, but they could now find themselves in a battle with Liverpool, especially if Konate leaves at the end of the summer.
Jacquet extended his contract with Rennes in May, with his existing contract due to expire in 2029, and suitors may have to part with a big fee to convince the French club to part with him.
More clubs will join both the Reds and Arsenal in the pursuit of the youngster at the end of the season, and joining a club where he is guaranteed regular playing chances will be more appealing to him.
