There remains the possibility of another defensive option being recruited at the end of the current campaign.
The likely loss of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer - combined with the 2027 contract expirations for both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez - mean Richard Hughes needs more options.
We’ve seen the likes of Nico Schlotterbeck and Alessandro Bastoni emerge as potential Liverpool transfer targets. However it now seems that Atalanta’s highly-rated young defender Giorgio Scalvini has been added to the list.
According to a report on SportsBoom the 22-year-old has found his way onto the Premier League champions’ recruitment shortlist.
“Liverpool is eyeing Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini as a potential £45m signing after missing out on Marc Guehi,” the report reads.
“The young Italian center-half is attracting interest from top clubs in Europe, but his talent and potential make him a standout prospect.
“Despite injuries, Scalvini is seen as one of Serie A's finest emerging talents, likely to command a significant transfer fee.”
Having missed significant portions of the season owing to injury in the first half of the season the eight-cap Italy international is approaching his best form for La Dea.
The elegant defender is giant of stature - standing 6’4 - and is under contract at the New Balance Arena until 2028 and valued at £45m per the report.
His signing - alongside those of Jacquet and previously Leoni - promise to usher in a new defensive era at Anfield.
