Liverpool weigh succession plan as Alisson’s Anfield era nears its close

Liverpool are plotting life after Alisson. According to NY Times, he is expected to stay this summer and the club want him for 2026-27, most likely departing when his contract ends next season.

Signed from Valencia two years ago as a long-term investment, Giorgi Mamardashvili played more than anticipated during Alisson’s hamstring lay-offs. In 20 outings he won six and his kicking was a weakness, with 54 percent of passes going right versus Alisson’s 60 percent to the left, and both below par on goals prevented.

Mamardashvili now awaits guidance from new head coach Andoni Iraola, having nearly joined Iraola’s former club Bournemouth on loan in 2024. Freddie Woodman, 29, made four appearances, starting at Everton and Manchester United, and remains third-choice next season.

Vitezslav Jaros was on loan at Ajax before a knee injury in February, expected to sideline him for most of 2026. “When I’m (going to be) ready to become Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, especially with two formidable competitors like Alisson and Mamardashvili, is difficult to say, because taking their place isn’t easy,” he told De Telegraaf. He can reassess in the 2027 winter window if rehab goes to plan.

Armin Pecsi, 21, was on the bench for three league games and is likely to take a 2026-27 loan after debuting for Hungary. Caoimhin Kelleher impressed in his first season at Brentford and, with no buyback clause, could appeal if he excels next term, though Liverpool would prefer to promote from within.
