Reds hit by Alisson and Hugo Ekitike injuries ahead of Stamford Bridge trip as Giorgi Mamardashvili prepares for top-flight debut
Liverpool will be without the injured Alisson Becker when they travel to face Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend.
The Reds are nervously awaiting the results of a scan on their first-choice goalkeeper’s injured hamstring after he was forced off in the second half of Tuesday’s shock 1-0 defeat by Galatasaray in the Champions League.
While the exact severity of the injury and a potential time frame for Alisson’s return is not yet known, Arne Slot was quick to rule him out of the trip to Chelsea on Saturday evening.
"If my player is on the floor, nine out of 10 times I fear the worst and with the worst I mean that he cannot continue," Slot said of Alisson, who was subsequently omitted from Carlo Ancelotti’s latest Brazil squad for friendlies against South Korea and Japan.
"It's never positive if you go off like this. You can be sure he is not playing Saturday."
With Alisson - who has struggled with hamstring issues in the past - definitely sidelined, summer signing Giorgi Mamardashvili will make his Premier League debut for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, having deputised for the final 35 minutes off the bench against Galatasaray and also started in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton.
The Georgian international should be backed up in west London by fellow new arrival Freddie Woodman.
Hugo Ekitike also went off injured in Istanbul, but there is said to be hope that the French striker was only suffering from cramp and is optimistic of being involved against Chelsea.
Alexander Isak would likely have been in line to start up front against Chelsea anyway, with the British record signing and Mohamed Salah having both been named on the bench in midweek before coming on in the second half, along with Alexis Mac Allister and Conor Bradley.
Federico Chiesa will need to be assessed after missing the Galatasaray game with what Slot described as a “little niggle”, while Giovanni Leoni has now undergone surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered on debut against Southampton.
Slot expects the Italian defender to be on the sidelines for around a year as he recovers from such a devastating setback so early in his Anfield career.
Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Bradley, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai; Wirtz; Isak
Injured: Alisson, Leoni
Doubts: Ekitike, Chiesa
Time and date: 5.30pm BST on Saturday October 4, 2025
