Hull City step up talks with Liverpool over Lewis Koumas loan

Hull City’s January business continues to gather pace, with Hull Daily Mail reporting that talks are advancing with Liverpool over a loan move for Lewis Koumas. The 20 year old winger has returned to Anfield after his Birmingham City spell was cut short, and the Tigers now appear well placed to revive a move that stalled in the summer.

With the transfer window closing next Monday at 7pm, Hull are pushing to finalise a deal that could add another attacking option to a squad firmly in the Championship promotion conversation. However, as Hull Live reports, “a departure is almost certainly needed before it can be ratified by the EFL,” underlining the financial and squad management pressures that often shape late window moves.

Early return from Birmingham shapes Koumas future

Koumas’ first half of the campaign at Birmingham City proved mixed. He made 25 appearances in all competitions, but only nine of those were starts, a clear sign that regular football proved elusive. His solitary goal came in a standout moment, the 3-2 win over Coventry City, a reminder of the impact he can make when confidence and opportunity align.

That limited involvement has accelerated Liverpool’s search for a more suitable development pathway. For Hull, chasing promotion and looking to add depth and creativity, the timing feels opportune. The MKM Stadium could offer Koumas the platform to rebuild momentum and sharpen his edge in a high stakes environment.

Championship pedigree adds to appeal

Despite his age, Koumas already brings significant second tier experience. He has clocked up 66 Championship appearances, including 49 for Stoke City, where he scored six goals and added three assists. Add to that nine caps for Wales, and there is a clear profile of a player who has been trusted in demanding settings.

Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic previously highlighted that potential, telling Hull Live, “Koumas is a very good player, a young player, with big potential, so we will see. We will see what will happen in the future.” Those words now feel like groundwork for a move that could finally materialise.

Promotion push accelerates January activity

Hull’s recent form adds extra urgency to their transfer dealings. Saturday’s 2-1 win over Swansea City, with new arrivals Yu Hirakawa and Kieran Dowell both featuring, marked a third straight victory and kept the Tigers fourth in the table. Momentum is building, and the club are acting like a side that believes automatic promotion remains within reach.

Deals for Paddy McNair and Toby Collyer are also reported to be complete, while further exits could yet pave the way for additional reinforcements.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this potential move makes a great deal of sense. Koumas clearly needs consistent minutes at senior level, and his Birmingham spell did not provide that rhythm. Hull, by contrast, offer a pressure filled but development friendly environment, where every game carries weight and every performance is scrutinised.

For Liverpool, the priority should be placing young players in situations that stretch them tactically and mentally. A promotion chasing Championship side does exactly that. It tests decision making, physical resilience and adaptability, all qualities that young attackers must refine before they can realistically compete for Premier League minutes.

There is also a wider pattern here. Liverpool’s loan strategy has increasingly focused on competitive environments rather than comfortable ones. Koumas joining Hull fits that logic. It places him in a squad with ambition, experienced professionals, and a clear collective goal.

From the fan angle, there is quiet optimism that this kind of move could finally unlock a more consistent version of Koumas. The raw talent has always been there, but what has been missing is continuity and trust. If Hull can offer that, Liverpool could benefit in the medium term from a player returning sharper, tougher, and more ready to challenge at a higher level.
