Signed from Puskas Akademia for around £1.5 million last summer, Pecsi did not make a senior appearance in 2025/26, although he was named as an unused substitute on five occasions. Internally, his development has earned encouragement. He has featured for the under-21s, appeared in pre-season against Athletic Club, and his performances were recognised with a Premier League 2 Player of the Month nomination in January 2026.

Pecsi has clearly done enough behind the scenes to earn a solid reputation, but there is only so much value in under-21 football once a player reaches this stage, especially in that position.

Goalkeepers develop differently from outfield players. They need matches, pressure, mistakes, recovery and consistency. Sitting on the bench or training with the seniors can help, but it cannot replace a full season of real responsibility. If Hartberg give him that platform, Liverpool may learn far more about his long-term level over the next year than they could at Kirkby.

There is also something reassuring in the profile of the move. Austria can be a very useful league for technical and tactical growth, and it sounds as though there was interest elsewhere too. That suggests this is not a case of simply finding any destination, it is about choosing one with the right environment.

Supporters will naturally focus on Iraola, the senior names and the USA friendlies, but these loan decisions matter. If Liverpool believe Pecsi can eventually challenge higher up the club’s goalkeeping ladder, then this season may be the one that tells them. For now, it looks sensible, measured and potentially very beneficial for everyone involved.
