Speaking to RTL (via Sport.de) following Germany’s 3-1 win against Northern Ireland, Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz has spoken about his goal.

Before Wirtz scored his free-kick, Germany captain Joshua Kimmich approached him and seemingly said something to him.

However, it seems the 22-year-old did not hear what the Bayern Munich midfielder said when questioned about it:

“To be honest, I don’t know. There were too many comments, random ideas from the side. I knew I just wanted to try it because the position was good.”

On the performance as a whole, as Germany had to fight back after allowing the visitors to get back into the game, Wirtz said:

“We all know that the last game was a disaster. We wanted to do better because we brought far too little energy to the pitch. I think we did better today; we started the game very well. It was a very good performance, one we can build on. And one we’re happy with now.”

Finally, the talk turned to Wirtz’s opening few games for Liverpool. While a goal has currently eluded him, the Köln native did assist in his opening game in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace. While in his other performances, there have been flashes of his quality as he gets used to the league.

On when he might score his first Liverpool goal, Wirtz said:

“It might take a few more games. It’s a different league, a different kind of football. I knew that, and I’m glad I’m here. When will I score for the first time? I have no idea, hopefully in the next game. It will come eventually.”

Germany’s next set of World Cup qualifiers will be against Luxembourg and the return game against Northern Ireland next month.
