Ibrahima Konaté (26) has been in contract extension talks with Liverpool for 18 months, but an agreement has yet to be reached with the Merseyside club. However, the Frenchman wants his future resolved before heading to this summer’s FIFA World Cup, L’Équipe understands.
There have been incessant rumours pertaining to the future of the France international. Liverpool’s initial contract extension offer was judged to be too low. That led to a period of uncertainty where Konaté was linked to clubs around Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain. At that point, contract extension talks were on hold, however, they have since resumed, and L’Équipe understands that the most likely scenario is one in which the defender extends his current deal, which is set to expire this summer.
Liverpool and Konaté have never been closer to striking an agreement. There are, however, details to iron out, and in the meantime, Spanish clubs are attempting to scupper Liverpool’s renewal plans. Real Madrid have been touted as an admirer. The likelihood, however, is that the Frenchman stays on Merseyside, and he aims to make his decision within the next few weeks.
