Next Week Will See Liverpool Transfers Accelerate

As I write this in the aftermath of the European Championships final (England have lost 2-1) and before the Copa America show piece later, it will leave only the upcoming Olympics as the remaining international sideline from domestic duties. With Liverpool‘s preseason now fully underway and training videos dropping onto social media, I expect that the new Liverpool Head Coach, Arne Slot, will soon be confirming those he will be keen to keep in the squad, as well as those that can be moved on, to top up what I believe to be a substantial summer fund.

When Is Activity in The Market Likely to Begin?

As stated, with the two international tournaments closing out on Sunday, 14 July, it will allow certain assets to notify the club to any potential injuries. Hopefully, there will be nothing untoward and the only issue that may linger will be the likely suspension of Uruguay’s ferocious striker, Darwin Núñez. Once a verdict on that question is announced, the reds will be keen to ensure that any punishment is limited to the international stage, however, given the disgraceful circumstances which endangered the players’ immediate families, I can see members of the Football community standing up for the 25-year-old (and any other players), to ensure that they are not made the scapegoats of an horrendous situation.

The immediate futures of Fábio Carvalho, Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams, Billy Koumetio, Kostas Tsimikas, and Caoimhin Kelleher, may well see a couple of players moved on in the next week or so. The Liverpool players that have participated within summer tournaments will be granted an extended rest, which would keep them away from the AXA Training Centre for a few more weeks. Such a predicament would create a requirement to keep a few fringe players in house, to facilitate preseason training and subsequent friendlies.

Despite this and the need (from the fanbase) to maintain a level of patience, I do feel that next week could see one player signed to kickstart the reds summer transfer business. Following the appointment of Michael Edwards to the CEO position, he was quick to bring in Bournemouth’s former Technical Director, Richard Hughes, who undertook the role of Sporting Director for the Anfield giants.

Despite only having started in his role recently, there would have been a steady stream of dialogue between executives and the formulating of plans, to ensure that the squad is refined to meet the wishes of the new Head Coach. If experience points to anything substantial, it is that Michael Edwards will run a ship that is built upon keeping the clubs transfer dealings within a tight circle of trust. As we approach the final month before the 2024/25 Premier league season, I foresee the trigger being pulled on several deals over the coming weeks.

Who Is Likely to Break the News?

There will be a good few supporters (including myself), who will have notifications turned on for the likes of Paul Joyce and David Ornstein, as the two prominent sources for credible information. Only when the club feels that any news should be delivered, will the fans be made privy to what is going on behind the scenes. To deliver a little piece of hope, the curtain may be about to be pulled back to reveal the first signing of this new era, allowing Liverpool v2.0 to take shape.
