Locatelli targets Italy return amid Juventus ‘changes’ | OneFootball

Manuel Locatelli confirms he targets an Italy national team return, but he’s entirely focused on Juventus, where he’s become one of the dressing room leaders.

Locatelli has started four games from four in Serie A and is preparing for tomorrow’s Champions League game against PSV in the Champions League.

Juventus will play in the competition for the first time in nearly two years, as they faced a ban from European tournaments last season.

“We missed it last term. It’s the most important competition for clubs,” Locatelli said at a press conference on Monday.

“We are thrilled, and we can’t wait to go to the pitch. It’s special to hear that music; we want to do so in front of our fans, who will help us.

“We have changed; I am one of the players who have been around for longer, so I must set an example. It’s a young group with nice guys with great motivation,” continued Locatelli.

“The new midfielders have great quality and raise the quality. We have different characteristics, but it’s a pleasure to play with them.”

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti snubbed Locatelli for the Euros and international games in September, but the midfielder hopes to play for the Azzurri again soon.

“Of course, the national team is an objective, but I am focused and happy at the club,” he said.

“Of course, returning to the national team is one of my targets.

“We must occupy the space well. I must provide balance even if sometimes I can move further up the pitch,

“I know last season was difficult, I admit it, but I am working to improve,” he continued.

“I spoke to the coach right away, and he was very clear about it. We are working well, and we want to continue doing so.”

Juventus were held to a goalless stalemate by Empoli on Saturday.

“We didn’t want that result. We are a bit upset, but tomorrow we have an important game,” said Locatelli.

“I don’t think we should have fear. We all want to play, and internal competition requires great maturity. We start again with a great desire to work and fight on every ball, which is the most important thing.

“It won’t be easy; they have a great team, but it’s all about the attitude and recovering the ball quickly. We must dominate proceedings,” Locatelli concluded.
