Former Germany coach Joachim Löw has expressed surprise at Florian Wirtz’s decision to join Liverpool, telling Sport Bild he had expected the Bayer Leverkusen star to follow Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid if he opted for a move abroad.
However, the 65-year-old also emphasized his confidence in Wirtz’s ability to succeed in the Premier League, describing the 22-year-old as a player with “no ceiling.”
“Liverpool is a real statement. Moving to the Premier League always comes with challenges - starting with the rhythm of play,” Löw said, adding:
"But Florian Wirtz has no ceiling. He’s definitely ready for the next step. That feeling has been around for a while. I just thought he’d be more likely to choose Real Madrid if he moved abroad, highlighting Wirtz's close working relationship with Xabi Alonso as a key factor in the midfielder's progress.
“He’s developed enormously under Alonso. They have a strong relationship based on trust - and that’s extremely important for a young player. Still, I have no doubt that Wirtz would have succeeded wherever he went. He plays with a natural confidence that you can’t teach. He has all the skills a footballer needs to become a world-class player.”
Wirtz’s move to Liverpool is not yet finalized, with the two clubs still negotiating over the transfer fee.
