The Pride have netted just one goal in their last four matches in all competitions and chances have often been in short supply.
Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City are up next and London City Lionesses boss Maestre says that his side are working hard to find solutions in the attacking third.
“We have had problems creating chances because in the final third, we have not been connecting that last pass or maybe that last one v one situation was not the best,” Maestre said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “In the last game against Sunderland, we were very confident in managing the build-up and we created chances to have more clear progressions but we didn’t take full advantage.
“We need to be quicker to create chances. We have a structure in place and there will be opportunities to exploit [the opponent]. We are moving forward. We know the competition is very tough and we need to be more connected but I think we are working very hard [to get better] and get more players into box situations.”
Opponents Manchester City suffered their first defeat since the opening day of the season as they went down 1-0 to Chelsea in the Subway Women’s FA Cup semi-finals in midweek. Maestre doesn’t want to over-analyse that game when preparing for this weekend.
He said “When you suffer this kind of defeat, maybe in the next match, you are more prepared to respond.
“Every match is different. Chelsea have been able to beat them twice now but we cannot compare to other teams because the game was different, the players are different. It could be a mistake if we focus too much energy on that game.
“We have analysis from that match but we need to be more connected with the way that we prepare.”
London City Lionesses have plenty of top level experience in their ranks and Maestre highlighted the importance of this when facing an opponent like Manchester City.
He said “When you face a team at the top of the league, you need that experience because it’s not just about energy, it’s about how you manage certain situations. Sometimes, you will have periods where you struggle in a game and you need to put the experience on the table and try to use it.”
London City Lionesses’ Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City kicks-off at 11.55am on Sunday. Tickets are on general sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
