London City Lionesses ease to opening day win over Man Utd | OneFootball

There was plenty of intrigue going into the opening fixture of the 2026/27 Women's Super League which saw London City Lionesses cruise past Manchester United.

London City have once again spent big and brought in high-profile players, including Alexia Putellas and Mapi Léon who both started. Those kinds of reinforcements weren't available for a new-look Manchester United with Eva Olid at the helm.

Indeed, Olid has had just a few weeks to prepare her team and that showed as United looked uncertain in their passing sequences while London City pressed high up the pitch to pin them mostly inside their own third.

Despite such dominance, both of the home side's goals came through set-pieces. The first was a corner whipped in from the left that Julia Zigiotti Olme headed into her own net under the pressure of Alanna Kennedy.

United couldn't get any attacking moves going and indeed, failed to register a shot on target throughout the game.

Surprisingly, it took until the 82nd minute for the win to be wrapped up when a corner played short from the right resulted in the impressive Delphine Cascarino putting a low ball that Daniëlle van Donk flicked home.

The nine minutes of added time due to Lucía Corrales' injury did give the visitors a late consolation goal when substitute Simi Awujo fired in past Elene Lete but it was far too late.

London City Lionesses face West Ham United next in a game they will be expected to win while things don't get any easier for United who host Chelsea in their second game of the new season.
