London City Lionesses have announced the blockbuster signing of Alexia Putellas following the Spaniard's departure from Barcelona.

Putellas has spent the last 14 seasons at Barcelona where she became one of the world's best players, twice winning the Ballon d'Or and lifting the Champions League four times – with one of those coming in a 4-0 win over OL Lyonnes in her penultimate game.

OL Lyonnes are of course owned by Michele Kang like London City Lionesses, and the businesswoman shared the stage with Putellas for the 32-year-old's announcement.

The news is also significant for the WSL who will now boast another of the world's greatest players. Meanwhile, London City Lionesses' continued investment will be expected to finish much higher than the sixth place they achieved last season.

“I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses,” Putellas said upon signing for the Bromley-based club.

"The club’s ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me.

"I look forward to making an impact on the pitch as we challenge for titles.

"Off the pitch, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to work with Michele in elevating women’s football in England and on the global stage."

Last season, Putellas played 43 times for Barça in all competitions, scoring 20 times.
