Tottenham Hotspur claimed a resounding 3-0 victory over Qarabag FK in their Europa League opener, but fans had their hearts in their mouth after watching captain Son Heung-min limp off the pitch.

Manager Ange Postecoglou took the South Korean off after treatment on the pitch failed to improve his condition. The coach brought on Timo Werner to replace him.

“It could just be precautionary, but the South Korean looked stiff while walking off the field,” BBC pundit Nizaar Kinsella said.

Postecoglou and Spurs fans will be sweating on his fitness ahead of their trip to Old Trafford this weekend to face Manchester United.

Spurs are desperate to secure two Premier League wins on the trot and need the captain to lead the way.

Meanwhile, Tottenham claimed a 3-0 win over Qarabag despite defender Radu Dragusin receiving a red card in the seventh minute. Postecoglou took off a distraught Lucas Bergvall for Destiny Udogie to reshape the team.

Spurs were open and naive, as we have come to expect, but the bravery paid off. Brennan Johnson slotted in the opener just moments after the sending-off, thanks to fine work from Dominic Solanke. It was Johnson’s third consecutive game with a goal following his winners against Coventry City and Brentford.

And then Pape Matar Sarr doubled the lead in the second half. Qarabag had a few chances but struggled to find their shooting boots. Yves Bissouma looked tentative in his first start after some time on the sideline and gave away a clumsy penalty that the Azerbaijan Premier League champions missed.

Solanke ensured the win, finishing a loose ball after the Qarabag keeper spilt a Son shot. Solanke is the first Spurs player to score and assist on his debut in major European competition since Darren Bent in September 2007.

Tottenham fans will be desperate to hear good news regarding Son ahead of the clash with Man United on Sunday.

Son is still the club’s talisman. Former head coach Antonio Conte hailed him as a fantastic player for his many exploits in white, and Tottenham will be banking on him delivering the goods against the Red Devils.
