Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has taken aim at Jamie Carragher directly over the pundit’s comments surrounding Mohamed Salah in recent days.
Fresh from inspiring City’s dramatic 1-2 comeback victory at the Bernabeu, Haaland stepped into the glare of post-match media coverage with confidence high and the mood light, particularly showcased by one broadcasters.
City had shown their steel in Europe, overturning an early deficit after Rodrygo’s opener and then navigating heavy second-half pressure to secure a vital three points. The triumph eased tensions following their loss to Bayer Leverkusen and added further weight to the growing pressure on Xabi Alonso.
Jamie Carragher’s outspoken criticism of Mohamed Salah had dominated football discussion in recent days as the former Liverpool defender’s furious monologue on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football – accusing Salah and his agent of “choreographed” mixed-zone behaviour designed to pressure Liverpool ownership – ignited widespread debate.
Carragher suggested Salah was prioritising personal leverage over team stability, going so far as to imply the forward was targeting the manager during a fragile period for the club, while speaking after his sides’ dramatic 3-3 draw against Leeds United.
Now, speaking live on CBS Sports from the Bernabeu after Manchester City’s 1-2 win over Real Madrid, Erling Haaland was greeted by a punditry team of Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, and Carragher.
“I’m getting nervous now when I’m seeing Jamie Carragher in the studio,” Haaland reacted when first welcomed onto the programme, in direct response to the Liverpool icon’s recent outbursts surrounding Salah.
Micah Richards aimed to keep the mood going by quizzing Haaland on whether he prefers Antonio Rudiger or his colleague Carragher, to which the City striker answered, “I think I need to say Rudiger now because Carragher is a bit loose cannon now.”
When offered a place on Carragher’s ‘Stick to Football’ podcast on The Overlap, the 25-year-old also said, “I mean, Jamie Carragher now in this moment, and Roy Keane? I think I need to bring my father then on the podcast.”
Erling Haaland continues to find himself in a rich vein of form on the field, and recently became the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals, doing so in just 111 games – beating Alan Shearer’s original tally by 13 matches.
Asked whether he can break all goalscoring records in English football, particularly Shearer’s leading goalscorer tally of 260 goals in the division, Haaland said, “I have a long contract at City, I’m enjoying myself, playing good football, good teammates.
“So read a bit between the lines and you will kind of have my answer. But, stay humble, relax, game by game, focus on the next game.”
Manchester City’s win in Madrid now sets the tone for a strong finish to the Champions League league phase, and Haaland’s remarks highlight a player comfortable not only with the physical demands of elite competition but also the shifting narratives that surround it.
Jamie Carragher’s comments on Mohamed Salah may continue to make headlines, but Haaland’s cheeky retorts ensure the spotlight shines just as brightly on Manchester City’s buoyant dressing-room mood.
Looking ahead, Erling Haaland’s individual form will be central as Manchester City navigate a congested schedule and push for control at both domestic and European levels.
