Louis Mafouta is enjoying one of the most prolific campaigns of his career, scoring 11 in 24 Ligue 2 outings for Guingamp. As reported by L'Équipe, the 31-year-old was named Ligue 2’s best player for December and January.

He netted against Montpellier on 30 January in matchday 21, a 1-3 defeat for Guingamp.

He is not the division’s leading scorer this Saturday morning, with Troyes forward Tawfik Bentayeb back on top since last week. It is the third time in the past four seasons Mafouta has gone past 10 Ligue 2 goals, and he has done it quicker than usual.

Head coach Sylvain Ripoll believes Mafouta is becoming more complete month by month, adding variety to his game and sharpening areas he had explored less. The former Amiens forward is known for his pace and runs in behind, and he also shows the edge Ripoll values when finishing and a clear understanding of his strengths.

Ripoll senses a determination to progress, perhaps linked to arriving later at this level, with no desire to waste time and a wish to make up ground. Mafouta says hard work is non-negotiable, and he wants younger players to grasp that elite football is difficult and effort brings rewards. His graft has paid off, even if Ligue 2 defenders are far less delighted to see him coming.
