Santos failed to beat Recoleta’s reserves, a 1-1 draw at Vila Belmiro that left supporters furious and the club bottom of the Sudamericana. According to Diario Do Peixe, the performance was widely condemned in post-match ratings.
Neymar struck after being set up by Gabriel Barbosa, then later missed with the goal unguarded. Luan Peres conceded a needless penalty near the corner of the box, and Gabriel Brazão failed to get close to the spot kick.
Neymar was the only forward credited with genuine invention. Gustavo Henrique was praised for tireless work across the pitch, while Gabriel Bontempo combined neatly with Neymar but again lacked a finish.
Gabigol created the opener but repeatedly lost possession, ruined breaks and squandered a clear chance, leaving to loud jeers. Moisés offered little before being replaced, Rollheiser disappointed, and Igor Vinícius rarely threatened in attack, in contrast to the more secure Escobar.
Head coach Cuca was heavily criticised for an inadmissible approach, with the team easing off after the early goal. The second half was described as lacking individuality, shots and basic fluency, and the stalemate against Recoleta’s understudies was branded a shame for fans, with calls for more youth and fewer big names.
