Lubo Penev returns as Lokomotiv Sofia head coach after cancer recovery | OneFootball

After overcoming kidney cancer, former Valencia forward Lubo Penev has returned to the dugout as Lokomotiv Sofia head coach on a one-year deal with an option.

The Bulgarian club announced the appointment and underlined his family ties to Lokomotiv. At his unveiling, Penev noted that his father and uncle began their football journeys there.

He described a renewed bond with the team and expressed hope that results would follow, stressing that building a competitive side with a clear identity is the priority, with attractive football for players and supporters.

Penev accepted there will be matches that do not go to plan, insisting the team must play with purpose. He believes the target should be far higher than eighth place and said there can be no comfort or complacency, with competition and standards applying to everyone.

Owner Veselin Stoyanov welcomed him, hoping his arrival boosts support and brings success. He highlighted Penev’s blood link to Lokomotiv and called him an example, wishing him health and success.
