Two weeks after that night in Bilbao and, having completed a clean sweep of Player of the Season awards, you could have excused Lucas Bergvall for having his feet up on a beach somewhere.
At the moment though, he’s swapped the beach for Hotspur Way as he continues to work his way back from an ankle injury that, heartbreakingly, ruled him out of the semi-final and final of our UEFA Europa League success, having played such a big part in getting us there.
Indeed, up to the injury the day before the semi-final, first leg against Bodo/Glimt on 1 May, the young Sweden international - still only 19 - had featured 45 times in all competitions in his debut season, including an ever-present 12/12 matches, 10 starts, in our UEL campaign.
“At first it was really frustrating and so disappointing knowing I wouldn’t be part of it, in terms of playing,” said Lucas, talking to us at the training centre after lunch on Tuesday afternoon. “But then I knew I had to support the lads, support the team, just help wherever I could, just to be positive and to be there for them.”
Back to the present day, though, and Lucas is pleased with his progress. “I’m getting better every day,” he told us. “I’m still here training, rehabbing and I’ve done that for about two weeks now. I’m going on holiday soon, but I just want to make sure everything is right.”
Lucas has now added his UEL medal - ‘it’s looking nice on the wall’ - to his Official Supporters' Clubs (OSC) Player of the Season and both Player of the Season awards from One Hotspur Members and One Hotspur Juniors. Presented those awards earlier this month, Lucas became the first teenager since legendary midfielder Glenn Hoddle (also 19) to be awarded such an accolade.
“It’s been crazy,” he added. “I've learned a lot this year, both on and off the pitch, just training every day here with some of the top players in the world, the staff... I'm so grateful for this season and for everyone helping me to achieve these awards. It’s such a big honour. I can’t really describe it. It’s an amazing feeling - and there is more come.”
