Lucas Chevalier set to start as Matveï Safonov challenge grows

Lucas Chevalier is expected to start against Paris FC at the Parc des Princes on Sunday at 20:45, his first outing since an ankle injury on 29 November at Monaco, in a match that ended 0-1. He has been at PSG since the summer.

According to L'Équipe, the French goalkeeper has been backed consistently by Luis Enrique and the hierarchy, despite Matveï Safonov’s three impressive starts during his absence.

Luis Enrique has kept the routine unchanged and did not feel the need for any special talk with Chevalier, believing the situation is clear. Since arriving in 2023 he has fostered a place where pressure is real but mistakes are not damning.

He wants to handle Chevalier as he did Gianluigi Donnarumma last season, with the difference that Chevalier is his choice, unlike the Italian, now at Manchester City.

Chevalier, who feels fully recovered, remains number one yet knows his coach could turn to an in-form Safonov in certain periods. He showed no annoyance, spent the break with family, and privately says he feels very good.

Surprised by the tough environment and what he sees as overly virulent criticism around PSG, the France international with one cap understands Luis Enrique’s stance and now knows he will have time to justify that faith.
