Lucas Chevalier’s PSG No.1 spot under threat?

In the absence of Lucas Chevalier, injured by a challenge in the game against AS Monaco at the end of November, Matvey Safonov has stepped up for Paris Saint-Germain.

The Russian has started the last two Ligue 1 games for PSG, whilst he also kept a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Athletic Club in the UEFA Champions League last week. Chevalier is returning to fitness, following his ankle injury, but his absence provided a window of opportunity for Safonov to impress.

The former Lille OSC goalkeeper’s start to life at PSG has been unconvincing, and L’Équipe now reports that there is no longer a hierarchy of goalkeepers at the club. “The best [goalkeeper] will play in each match,” a club source told the publication. Chevalier, due to his potential, is still seen as the No.1 in the eyes of Luis Enrique, L’Équipe added.

The discourse coming from the club was similar when Safonov earned more game time during a patch of poor form for Gianluigi Donnarumma back in the 2023/24 season. Against Fontenay in the Coupe de France on Saturday, it could be third-choice goalkeeper Renato Marin who gets the nod.
