Lucas Paquetá made significant personal outlays, around R$ 10 million, to seal his record switch back to Flamengo and arrive in time for the Supercopa do Brasil. The midfielder is now the most expensive signing in Brazilian football history.

According to Globo.com, Flamengo and West Ham agreed a fee of 41.25 million euros but haggled over instalments. The deal was settled at 42 million euros, with Paquetá assuming the 750,000 euro difference, to be deducted from his wages. He also gave up his January salary as West Ham would only pay if he stayed until month end and Flamengo start paying in February.

He paid for a charter flight from London to Rio last week, about R$ 1.5 million, to be available for the Supercopa. He landed on 29 January and signed on 30.

His on-pitch introduction did not match the script, featuring a missed chance in the 2-0 loss to Corinthians at Mané Garrincha.

He will have the Recopa Sul-Americana, against Lanús on 19 and 26 February, to chase a first title since returning and build rhythm with new team-mates.
