Lucas Perri says he had to abandon his penalty homework in Leeds United’s FA Cup shoot-out at Birmingham City after the hosts’ retro “penguin” kit, a 1970s tribute, left him guessing. With no names on the shirts and no numbers on the shorts, the keeper relied on instinct yet still helped send Leeds into the fifth round.
A TV camera had shown his water bottle notes on likely takers and directions, but they proved useless when he could not identify who was stepping up. Perri dived low to his right to keep out third Birmingham taker Tommy Doyle.
“We had a video [on Birmingham penalty takers] but unfortunately for the first two penalties because they didn't have the number on the shorts it was difficult for me to see!” “And the third one we didn't know where he shot so I went on instinct. I’m happy to help the club.”
He was speaking to TNT Sports.
In his press conference, Daniel Farke said he leaves the goalkeeper with coach Ed Wootton before penalties, describing keepers as a special breed he prefers to let get on with it. He added he advised outfield players without overloading them, stressing belief even after setbacks.
Farke credited his players for well-taken penalties and praised Perri’s shoot-out display. Perri also hailed the team’s fight in a difficult tie and congratulated the whole team as they reached the next round.
