Lucas Veríssimo impressed and Gabriel Brazão ensured a point as Santos drew 0-0 with Cruzeiro at Mineirão in the Brasileirão’s eighth round.
On his debut, Cuca set up conservatively, with Igor Vinícius solid at the back as Santos offered little going forward. According to Globo.com, Brazão topped the ratings and Veríssimo excelled on his return as captain.
Cruzeiro fashioned only one clear opening before the break, Brazão saving at 28 minutes. Moisés struggled and was replaced at half-time by Thaciano.
With Thaciano as the reference, Santos loosened up but lacked end product. Brazão denied Neyser Villarreal, then produced a fine stop from Wanderson in the second half.
Luan Peres had an uncertain first half, improving after the interval, while Escobar was targeted and then steadied. Oliva screened reliably and tried his luck from range late on.
Gustavo Henrique worked hard yet left space for Matheus Pereira and tired late. Gabriel Menino helped Igor Vinícius against Kaiki Bruno and Arroyo, Rollheiser tested Matheus Cunha from distance. Rony attacked space up front and almost provoked a red card for William.
Rincón came on late and was booked within three minutes, João Schmidt also arrived to help see it out and made a key clearance. Thaciano missed a good chance that was then ruled offside. In stoppage time, Barreal’s finish was disallowed, leaving the match goalless.
