According to Sunderland Echo, Vulcano joined Régis Le Bris as assistant head coach last summer, then left by mutual consent after the coaching set-up was not the right fit.

After a short break from the game, the role gives him his first taste of leading a team. Monza will return to Serie A next season after winning promotion, and the Italian hopes to progress to senior management in time.

Earlier this week he reflected on his time on Wearside, calling it unforgettable, expressing gratitude and saying he would like to return to work in the country and its league one day, while thanking Sunderland.

Sunderland did not immediately replace him but have now added former Southampton and Portugal centre back José Fonte to the coaching team.

Fonte begins on Monday before the club’s pre-season tour of the US, taking his first coaching role since retiring. He will join Le Bris’s staff alongside Michael Proctor, Alessandro Barcherini, James Brayne, set pieces, Neil Cutler, goalkeepers, and Isidre Ramón Madir, chief analyst.
