Manchester United abandoned their pursuit of Carlos Baleba after Brighton & Hove Albion indicated their star midfielder is not for sale.
Baleba is still willing to move to Old Trafford, and United may wait until 2026 to land the Cameroonian talent.
However, there is an obvious lack of athleticism and technical prowess in United’s midfield, and these issues could plague Ruben Amorim as the season progresses.
A report in Spain suggests, the club’s hierarchy are looking at alternatives to strengthen Amorim’s midfield.
According to Orgullo Biri (via Sport Witness), Sevilla star Lucien Agoume is on United’s list.
The Frenchman has emerged as the linchpin of Sevilla’s midfield, helping them avoid relegation last campaign.
It is claimed the 23-year-old can be a cheaper alternative to Baleba. His contract in Seville includes a €40m release clause.
The report suggests United are considering making a move, stating: “Manchester is coming.”
As per a separate report, relayed by Vamos Mi Sevilla FC, Sevilla are willing to sell the dynamic midfielder, who moved to Spain from Inter Milan in 2024. However, the La Liga outfit will not sell Agoume for less than €30m.
Agoume is known for his ball-winning and long-pass ability.
Last season, he made 4.73 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes in La Liga. As per Statman Dave, these numbers put him “in the top 2% of midfielders for that metric.”
Considering Casemiro’s ageing legs and Manuel Ugarte’s lack of composure in the middle of the park, a midfielder of Agoume’s profile could prove to be a solid addition to Amorim’s ranks without a major financial commitment.
