Lucien Muller, former AS Monaco head coach and France international, has died aged 91. Born in Alsace, the news was announced on Tuesday 20 January.
Stade de Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot said the club was deeply saddened, praising Muller as a revered figure whose kindness and humanity matched his footballing stature.
Capped 16 times by France and a Euro 1960 semi-finalist, he played for Stade de Reims, Strasbourg, Real Madrid and Barcelona. As a player he was nicknamed “Petit Kopa”.
He moved into management in 1970. Monaco were the only French side he coached, spending the rest of his dugout career in Spain with Burgos, Zaragoza, Barcelona and Mallorca.
With Monaco, his side lost the 1984 Coupe de France final to Metz 2-0 after extra time, then lifted the trophy in 1985 by beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 through Bernard Genghini’s 14th minute strike.
