Lewis Hall may command a world-record fee for a full-back if he departs Newcastle United next year.

According to Samuel Luckhurst, the Newcastle United fan-favourite was valued in the region of £70 million this summer, but had been deemed off-limits by his club.

Newcastle adopting such a firm stance came after they were made aware of concrete Manchester United interest, with INEOS keen to make Hall Luke Shaw’s long-term successor.

They were even said to be privately assured that the 22-year-old wanted to make the switch to Old Trafford, where he could play Champions League football in 2026/2027, but knew he would not go as far as forcing a move.

Hall is a Magpies supporter himself and comes from a family of lifelong fans, so the chances of him pushing back against the board’s decision to not sell him were always going to be low.

Alas, he will be seeing out the campaign at St. James’ Park, and reports have even suggested this week that the defender is preparing to extend his stay beyond his current 2029 deal.

Indeed, Hall is said to be on the verge of signing a bumper two-year extension to keep him tied to the Tyneside outfit until June 2031.

It remains to be seen if a release clause will be added to his new contract but, either way, United are ready to try their luck again next summer.

Alongside the Chelsea graduate, United had also been linked with the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal), Jorge Salinas (Racing de Santander) and David Raum (RB Leipzig), before eventually ending the window with no defensive reinforcements.

It means Michael Carrick will be tested when it comes to making do with the options he has at his disposal, especially when considering that Luke Shaw, United’s most injury-prone player of the last decade, is the only out-and-out senior left-back in the squad.
