Former Lazio star Luis Alberto looked back fondly on his time at Formello, while highlighting his great rapport with Simone Inzaghi.
The ‘Magician’ spent eight years with the Biancocelesti, cementing himself as a fan favorite thanks to his elegant touch and astonishing playmaking skills. However, he left the club on a sour note in the summer of 2024 due to frictions in his relationship with the hierarchy. The Spaniard had publicly asked the club to release him during the season, and was eventually sold to Al-Duhail, where he remains active.
Nevertheless, Alberto remains fond of his Lazio spell. In his interview with Flashscore, the attacking midfielder revealed that his two favorite campaigns in the Italian capital were the 2017/18 season, when he scored 12 goals and provided 18 assists, plus the 2019/20 season, when the team was in the Scudetto mix, at least before the Covid-19 outbreak.
I have very good memories. The second year was a little bit extraordinary because I was able to score a lot of goals, because I was practically a striker; it was different. But if I have to pick one thing, I’ll go with the 2019/20 season before COVID came along. We had fun training and playing, and we had a great group. We were almost able to fight for the Scudetto, which is very difficult for Lazio because in Italy there are teams that are above us in terms of salaries, such as Inter, Milan, Juve and many others. And the truth is that we were able to compete and have fun, which was the best thing. We had a very good technical staff and a very good group of people. I think that year, until the bad luck of COVID arriving, we were in the fight for the Scudetto, which was pretty extraordinary.
The player also heaped praise on Inzaghi, who was confirmed as permanent Lazio manager shortly prior to his arrival in 2016. He described the current Al-Hilal boss as a father figure in the locker room, despite his relatively young age at the time.
At the beginning, it was difficult for him too because it was his first opportunity as a coach. He is not the same as he is now for sure because he has improved a lot now, but it was extraordinary. Simone, apart from being a coach, is a very close person; he tries to help you as much as he can, and for us, more than a coach, he was like a father in the dressing room. He always supported us above all else, and it was a beautiful experience. Thanks to that, we still have a good relationship.
