Luis de la Fuente has confirmed Real Madrid midfielder Thiago Pitarch has chosen Spain, while also welcoming Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera into his plans after Colombia interest.
“The great news is that Thiago wants to play for Spain, he’s very committed to the national team. We fully respect anyone who decides otherwise, but I’m very pleased that Thiago has chosen to wear our jersey,” he told Diario AS.
Pitarch, 18, has broken through at Real Madrid, starting their last five matches. Despite whispers of a senior call-up, he is with Spain under-19s, having already featured three times after call-ups in February and September.
Pitarch also qualifies for Morocco, who had pushed for him to switch. Spain have seen players change allegiance before, including Brahim Diaz and Munir El Haddadi, though de la Fuente expressed confidence in Pitarch.
“Mosquera is another important player who has joined our cause,” de la Fuente said. The former Valencia defender has been a regular for Spain under-21s in recent years. He praised the Arsenal player’s versatility across centre-back and full-back, and as it stands Mosquera is in contention for Spain’s World Cup squad.
