Paris Saint-Germain progressed in the UEFA Champions League at AS Monaco’s expense, but that progression – at least in part – came as a result of Monégasque indiscipline.

The Principality club played 45 minutes of the first leg with 10 men and then, in the second, they had levelled the tie on aggregate, only for Mamadou Coulibaly’s red card to hand PSG the upper hand. Despite that, Les Parisiens only narrowly progressed (5-4).

And then they were humbled in front of their own fans on Friday night. It was Monaco, the opponent once more, for the third time in three weeks. This time, they got the win (1-3). It is a loss that gives hope to Lens, who are looking to close the gap to PSG to just one point.

Perhaps more consequentially, it leaves the reigning European champions low on confidence as they prepare to host Chelsea on Wednesday night. Luis Enrique admitted as much. “It is the key point of the season. We need to rediscover our confidence,” began the Spaniard.

Luis Enrique added, “Confidence isn’t something you can buy at Monoprix. You have to build [it] day by day. We are clearly struggling, but we have to keep hope in order to change that.”
