Manchester United have received a timely boost in their hopes of landing Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique as their search for the next permanent manager continues.

Managerial hunt

Michael Carrick has enjoyed a fine start to life at United since he was named Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement, but there are still no guarantees that he will be handed the job on a permanent basis.

Carrick has won six, drawn one and lost one of the eight games he has taken charge of. Heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures, United sit in third place in the Premier League table, nine points adrift of Manchester City in second position.

Since Carrick took charge, United have embraced an exciting, attacking style of play that has fans daring to dream of Champions League football once again. But the United football leadership group insist that no knee-jerk decisions will be made, and an appointment will only be made after a thorough recruitment process.

The prevailing sentiment is that the job is Carrick’s to lose, unless a truly elite coach like Enrique or Julian Nagelsmann suddenly becomes available.

Enrique is widely considered one of the best tacticians in football. He boasts a stellar record, winning major trophies at every club he has been at.

During his time at Barcelona from 2014 to 2017, he secured two La Liga titles, a Champions League trophy, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. He has since claimed two Ligue 1 crowns with PSG and led the Parisians to their maiden Champions League triumph last season.

United are said to be eyeing him, although he reaffirmed his commitment to PSG last month.

The Manchester Evening News have now given an update on the 55-year-old coach, which may be seen as good news for United.

Enrique update

According to MEN, Enrique harbours a desire to work in England in the future, although it’s not specified how soon this is.

Tyrone Marshall points out, “I’m sure United will be sounding him out and he’s not had the easiest season at PSG, who are only one point clear of Lens in Ligue 1.”

“Enrique speaks excellent English and wants to work in the Premier League one day. But he also wants that to be with the right project, and whether United can convince him taking over at Old Trafford ticks that box is another question.”

“For now, Carrick remains favourite and I think that is about right, but there is plenty of time left this season and I wouldn’t rule Enrique out just yet.”

As Marshall points out, United are almost certain to keep a close eye on Enrique and the developments surrounding his future.
