In his pre-match press conference before PSG’s upcoming match against Marseille, Luis Enrique was asked about the possibility of allowing his Paris Saint-Germain players to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The participation of players at the upcoming Olympics has become a contentious subject within the French footballing public. Some clubs have been resolute in their stance on their players participating in the Games. Rennes are one of these clubs stating that they will not allow their players to participate.
Internationally, Real Madrid have followed suit in stating that they will not allow their players to play in the competition. This indicates that Kylian Mbappé (25) will be unable to participate for Thierry Henry’s Les Bleus team who will represent France in their home Olympics. The France U21 manager hopes to select Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann (32) and Olivier Giroud (36) representing Les Bleus.
When asked about his stance on players participating, Luis Enrique said, “I don’t own the players, the players have a contract with the club. It’s obvious that having won the Olympics once in my country, in Barcelona, it would be strange on my part to prevent a player from participating… There is also the freedom of the player which comes into account, I am quite open but we must protect the rights of the club and I am here to defend the rights of my club.”
