Manchester United’s hunt for a new head coach could be set for a bombshell twist as the “best manager in the world” now has the Old Trafford hotseat in his crosshairs, according to a new report.

A State of Chaos

INEOS’s decision to finally bring an end to Ruben Amorim’s tumultuous tenure on Monday morning was simultaneously shocking and unsurprising.

Amorim’s bombastic press conference after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United was not the first emotional outburst from the 40-year-old coach since arriving from Sporting CP.

But it was the first time he had directed his ire at those above him – and their response was decisive, as it would be in any other walk of life.

“The reality of it is, when you turn on your bosses, it doesn’t matter whether you’re at a football club or you work in Morrisons, if you turn on your bosses, you’re not going to keep your job very long,” Gary Neville remarked as the news spilled out on Monday.

In Amorim’s place, Under-18’s coach Darren Fletcher will take charge of the senior side for tonight’s match with Burnley in the Premier League, aided by Travis Binnion and Jonny Evans.

But the 41-year-old Scot is a temporary interim, with the club searching for a permanent caretaker until the end of the season. Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer is believed to be the favoured choice.

A long-term replacement for Amorim will then be sourced over the summer, when the pool of targets will grow with contracts expiring at the end of the season and the completion of the World Cup.

The early frontrunner is Crystal Palace chief Oliver Glasner – but a wealth of options are understood to be under consideration, both inside and outside of England.

One new name may now be added to the list, however, and he is the most outstanding candidate yet: Paris-Saint German’s treble-winning tactician, Luis Enrique.

Best in the World

François Gallardo reveals Enrique has “decided to leave” the French giant this summer in an explosive twist.

Gallardo contends the 55-year-old coach, who has enjoyed previous spells with Barcelona and AS Roma, is ready for a “new challenge in another league, the Premier League [with] Manchester United. ”

However, the Spanish reporter is a source known for big headlines with little substances, as GOAL astutely points out.

Enrique’s contract with PSG runs until 2027 and he is in charge of the best side in Europe, with a superb sporting director overseeing above him. And it was this executive, Luis Campos, who offered a resolute rejection of Gallardo’s story as “100% fake news”.

While a director is unlikely to say anything else about the prospect of his manager leaving in dramatic fashion, the prospect of swapping Paris for Manchester is a tough sell for anyone; the idea of giving up the Parc de Princes for Old Trafford is an even more remote.
