Paris-Saint Germain were confident heading into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund. That confidence was shattered at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.

Despite returning to France with a one-goal deficit to overcome, due to Niclas Füllkrug’s first-half winner in Dortmund a week earlier, PSG were bullish heading into the first leg with both Luis Enrique and Kylian Mbappé expressing confidence in Les Parisiens’ progression to the final of the Champions League.

However, it simply wasn’t to be. PSG were profligate, hitting the post four times on the night as they succumbed to a 2-0 aggregate defeat, with Mats Hummels netting the only goal on the night. PSG therefore drop out and are left ruing their missed chances.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Luis Enrique revealed that lifting his players’ heads was an impossible task. “I never speak to my players right at the end of the match. Tonight, I made an exception,” began the PSG manager.

He added, “I spoke individually with every player and I tried to boost their morale but it’s impossible to console players that have lost a Champions League semi-final at home. There is a lot of hurt. That is sport.” Whilst PSG are already confirmed as Ligue 1 champions, he will have to lift his side for the Coupe de France final later this month.
