Paris Saint-Germain expect to finalise the signing of Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernandez from FC Barcelona in the coming days.

The 18-year-old midfielder represents a market opportunity for the reigning European champions, who have accelerated negotiations with the La Masia talent with the intention of paying his €6 million release clause and completing the signing.

Luis Enrique the key

PSG moved quickly to take advantage of the release clause the moment Dro turned 18 on January 12.

And, according to AS, the presence of Luis Enrique has been decisive in PSG getting ahead of a large number of European clubs that had shown interest in signing Dro and were even willing to offer him significantly higher wages.

PSG’s position as favourites to sign Dro is largely down to the former Spain national team coach, regarded as one of the best managers in the world and a key figure in changing the recent history of the Parisian club.

The 18-year-old Barcelona starlet is attracted by the idea of playing under the Spanish coach. The style of play and leadership he has shown since arriving in Paris convinced the youngster that he would have a clear opportunity to earn minutes in the French capital.

Meanwhile, the PSG coach sees Dro as a midfielder capable of providing a qualitative step forward for PSG and of complementing Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz.

Although he avoided a question about the potential signing on Friday after the 3-0 win over Lille, the reality is that the French side had already taken a clear lead in the race to secure his signature the previous night.

Dro, for his part, is aware that the competition will be fierce and the demands high, but is determined to show Enrique that he can earn a regular place in the starting line-up of the reigning Champions League holders.
