Luis Figo calls for Gianni Infantino to resign amid FIFA investor row | OneFootball

Luis Figo has become the first great of the game to publicly urge Gianni Infantino to quit, as the FIFA president held a crisis meeting in Morocco, the most recent Africa Cup of Nations host, on Wednesday.

Daily Mail writes that the 2000 Ballon d'Or winner said Infantino should go, adding that he could outline FIFA’s problems at length but the solution was simple. The former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder has served as a UEFA adviser since 2017 and had publicly backed him at the 2016 election.

Last week FIFA announced a surprise plan to create a commercial company open to external investors, then scrapped it after opposition from across the game, including UEFA.

Figo said behaviour over the past 10 days was the worst and most underhand he had seen. He accused Infantino of trying to push through sweeping changes to enrich himself and his associates, and criticised a lack of transparency around the high returns sought by private equity.

Infantino is the sole declared candidate for re-election at a vote scheduled in March 2027 in Rabat. He also faces internal criticism, with secretary general Mattias Grafström telling staff that recent events were sad and condemnable.
