Former President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales was once again in the headlines on Thursday night, after the launch of his new book. However Rubiales’ narrative style was not the story of the night.
During a book launch event for his title ‘Killing Rubiales’, the ex-right-back suddenly rose from his seat and spun, as he tried to avoid one of three eggs thrown at him from the crowd, twice unsuccessfully. Rubiales then sprung from the stage to move for his assailant, who was restrained and led away. It was not lost on the attending public that it was far-right lobbyist Bertrand Ndongo who restrained him.
After the event, Rubiales was asked why he left the stage and went for the person egging him. He claimed he thought they were armed.
“Luckily, they stopped me. I don’t know if I had a weapon or anything. I saw a pregnant woman with two small children. I thought about the children. If I had grabbed it, we’d be in a very different situation now. I was very scared. They’re my friends. We all grew up together, and I was terrified. I don’t care if they throw eggs at me,” he told El Confidencial, confirming he would not press charges after they were arrested.
It now transpires that the person launching eggs at Rubiales was none other than his uncle, Luis Rubiales Lopez. He supposedly blames the former RFEF President for splitting apart their family, hence his shouts of ‘disgrace’. An added detail of intrigue is that Rubiales Lopez is in fact an actor too.

It is worth remembering that Rubiales’ book, which focuses on what he perceives as the media cancelling of his figure, follows on from him being convicted of sexual assault, banned from football by FIFA for three years and is currently under investigation for corruption.
Rubiales Lopez is the second uncle who has been a figure in the Rubiales saga. Back in 2022, Juan Rubiales, formerly chief of his cabinet at the RFEF, accused his nephew of misappropriation of Federation funds, including using his expenses to pay for illegal orgies.
