Luisão has renewed his criticism of Benfica and Gianluca Prestianni, accusing the club of using Eusébio’s image as a shield amid a racism row.

According to Glorioso 1904, the former Benfica captain used Instagram to denounce what he views as attempts to hide behind Eusébio and to discredit the victim.

He wrote that Benfica has always been greater than any circumstance, player, director or moment, and that it presents itself as an institution of values, human dimension and historic responsibility. He recalled arriving in 2003, when the team was in one of its biggest sporting crises.

He argued the discussion is about principles, not rivalries or protecting individuals. Racism, he stressed, is not a matter of opinion and must be confronted with firmness and responsibility. He urged society to look in the mirror and examine its conscience.

The post followed a new club statement. He concluded that time would show, with full justice, who stood on which side of the trenches, and expressed hope everyone proves equal to Benfica’s long-held greatness.
